What to do in East London and surroundings

East London Museum
Wonderful adventure into the past. Best known as the home of the Coelacanth. Stunning shipwreck and paeleantological sections. The museum also has an excellent display in the rich
and colourful Xhosa culture and some of the best examples of beadwork in the country. Coffee shop on premises.
Fort Glamorgan
Fort Glamorgan was established in 1848/9, at the same time that the harbour was officially founded, to provide "quarters for troops and to include a large commissariat store assets".
Today you can see a brick vaulted building that was once the powder house.
German Settlers Memorial
Commemmorates the 1858/9 arrival of more than 2000 German men, women and children, which helped expand the settlement. Designed and sculptured by Lippy Lipschitz.
Lock Street Gaol Shopping Complex
Formerly a prison, built in the 1800's and South Africa's first women's gaol. This gaol housed persons such as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (ex-wife of Nelson Mandela) and Daisy de Melker, who was accused of poisoning two husbands and a son. The original gallows can still be seen. It is now home to shops and offices.
Queens Park Zoo and Gardens
Including farmyard entertainment for children, Gately House, etc. Home of the "Smartie Train", a Round Table project which has entertained kids for decades. Experience night walks twice a month. Fantastic family outing.
Aquarium & Whale Watch Deck
This is the oldest aquarium in the country with a variety of fresh water and marine species. Seal show twice daily at 11.30am and 3.30pm. Feeding times: 10.30am and 3pm.

East London Town Bus
Buffalo City Bus Tour. Includes stops at Water World, City Hall, The Museum, Hemmingways Casino and Retail park.
Khayalabantu Cultural Village
+/- 30km from East London, near Mooiplaas. Your host will tell you about the Xhosa culture, whilst you can view Xhosa dancing and enjoy some Xhosa food. Get acquainted with the African spirit.
Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve
+/- 33km from East London. They offer: Game drives on 4x4 vehicles, a scrumptious buffet at
their Restaurant, horse rides, guided birding experience. See lion, rhino, leopard, giraffe and a host of antelope and bird life.

Komga
80km from East London. Activities on offers are: energetic range of hikes, as
well as Game Drives and fishing (you will need a 4X4 to reach most
fishing spots). Beautiful views of the Kubusie Valley.

East Coast Jikeleza
Dozens of activities suitable for a day's exploration.

Thornvalley Python Park
A visit is a must. The family will be entertained with pony rides, kids 4-wheelers, python display, crocodiles and ostriches to view and bass fishing. Family restaurant next to the duck pond.

Calgary Transport Museum
Collection of carts, wagons, buggies and a gypsy caravan and governess cart.

Hood Point Lighthouse
West Bank. The Hood Point Lighthouse was built in 1895. Open Monday, Wednesday, Friday 2pm to 4pm, Saturday 9am to 11am.
